Louisville Graston Technique

Graston Technique is an innovative, patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization that effectively breaks down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. The technique utilizes specially designed stainless steel instruments to detect and treat areas that are exhibiting soft tissue fibrosis or chronic inflammation.

Based on the area being treated, the athletic trainer will select the Graston tools that will be most effective. It is common to experience minor discomfort during the procedure and some bruising afterwards. This is a normal response and part of the healing process.

Graston tools can help smooth out and alleviate any fascial restrictions or adhesions in the muscle. They are more effective than massage at getting to the deep areas and promoting healing. This technique is especially beneficial on scar tissue, and can turn an injury into healthy, functioning tissue.

Compex Muscle Stimulation

The Compex is an electronic device that stimulates the muscles to improve or facilitate muscle recovery. Compex, is technology designed to create unique, strong, yet completely non-fatiguing, muscle contractions that set off a cascading series of physiologic events. When used during down-time, or when working out is not an option, this is a great alternative and helps prevent injuries.

The recovery specialist will place electrode pads around the specific muscle that is fatigued. These pads are specific to the athlete and will not be used on anyone else. The pads will be attached to leads on the Compex. The setting should be strong, but comfortable, and will create a small contraction in the muscle.

The process of contracting the muscles dilates blood vessels to increase blood flow and deliver more oxygenated nutrients to the specific area being treated. The lymphatic system is also engaged and benefits from this muscle activity. By pushing deoxygenated blood away from the fatigued area, the recovery of the muscle is greatly accelerated.

KT Tapeing / Rock Tapeing

Kinesio Tape (KT Tape) can be used on sports injuries, acute and chronic, to help with various conditions, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back strain/pain (subluxation, herniated disc), knee and shoulder conditions, and more. The tape is scientifically designed to provide muscular and structural support where it is applied, allowing the strained or injured area to recover. Our recovery specialists are trained to customize KT-Taping techniques for individual clients and injuries.

The athletic trainer will first clean the area that is being taped with alcohol. This will ensure that the KT Tape will stick. Next, the area will be sprayed with a quick-drying adhesive. After the spray dries, the tape will be applied. The length and stretch of the tape applied will depend upon the muscle and the condition being treated.

KT Tape is applied over muscles and joints to reduce pain and inflammation, and support muscles in movement on a constant basis. Depending on how it is applied, it also increases blood flow, and can help with swelling and lymphatic drainage. KT Tape is non-restrictive and allows for full range of motion.

The NormaTec Pulse Recovery System is a compression device that is designed to assist with recovery and rehabilitation in the arms, hips and legs. Created with athletes in mind, this technology helps you recover faster between training sessions and after performance. NormaTec flushes out harmful metabolites and allows you to recover in a comfortable setting. By strengthening the body from the inside out, with the help of NormaTec, you can reach your full athletic potential.

Your recovery specialist will select the best NormaTec accessory to use (legs, hips, or arms). There will be an appropriate sleeve for each body part that is attached to a hose. The specialist will help you with the sleeves, then turn the machine on for a 30-minute session. Pulsing action encourages fluids to move out of the muscles after a workout. The sleeve will compress and release in each cell as they fill with air. This pulsing keeps fluids from being forced in the wrong direction. The device releases the pressure in each cell at exactly the right moment to give your muscles maximum rest and recovery time.

Excess fluid and lactic acid will be flushed out of the muscle, leaving your legs, arms or hips feeling lighter and less sore. Using NormaTec regularly can increase range of motion and decrease inflammation and soreness.

Functional Movement Screening (FMS)

Functional Movement Screening (FMS) is an innovative system that is used to evaluate the quality of movement patterns in people of all ages. The screening appraises your movements and can precede your training, so you get the most benefit out of your exercise. Following these screenings, corrective exercises and treatments may be prescribed to improve movement quality and overcome any deficiencies. Functional Movement Screenings are the first step to minimizing your risk of injury by finding and fixing your weakest link.

Nutritional Counseling

Do you find that the results of your exercise regimen are hard to maintain without the proper nutrition? Knowing how to properly fuel your body to sustain a certain level of physical activity is vital; diet and exercise go hand in hand to help your body to perform at its best. The nutritionists at Sports Recovery Annex can design a customized nutrition plan for you to ensure that your body is being fed what it needs to thrive. An intentional, well-rounded diet is an essential part of having a healthy lifestyle, and we will encourage you to implement better eating habits.

Sports Stretching

Stretching is essential to muscle recovery, and our recovery specialists are educated on exactly how to loosen every muscle. Whether you are sore from a hard workout or preparing for a competition, a stretching session can be very beneficial. Loosening your muscles before exercising can prevent serious injuries, as well as increase your range of motion and muscle tone. A stretching session at Sports Recovery Annex can last anywhere from 15 minutes up to an hour, depending on the state and condition of your muscles.

Trigger Point Tools

Soft tissue therapy incorporates recovery tools that assist in unlocking tight muscles, reducing soreness and enhancing athletic and every day performance.

Each movement is designed to release tension through pressure and release techniques on specific soft tissue and fascia in the body.
